Pocket Wi-Fi shares one connection with a group. An eSIM is cheaper per person, has no battery to charge and nothing to return.

Rentals add costs at the edges: WiFiBOX charges a day's rent for each late day and ¥15,000 if the router is not back within 7 days, or for loss without its insurance (¥198 to ¥330 a day). It also warns some airlines treat the router like a power bank.

A Japan eSIM is installed at home on Wi-Fi and works when you land. The 7-day Day Pass has the same 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps rule as WiFiBOX's 3 GB plan, with no router to charge, carry or post back.

When pocket Wi-Fi is the better pick

  • Four or more people sharing one connection all day.
  • A phone that is carrier-locked or has no eSIM. Japan's tourism board notes a phone must be unlocked for a SIM.
  • Laptops and tablets without mobile data; an eSIM can share a hotspot too, but the phone then does the work.

Japan's tourism board suggests pocket Wi-Fi for remote areas. Our Japan pack lists its networks on the Japan page; check the area before a rural trip.
