Add an eSIM as a second line and keep your number

Add the eSIM, keep the home line on for calls and texts, and choose the eSIM for data. It takes a few settings.

Updated 4 November 2026

iPhone

  • Connect to Wi-Fi, then install the plan with the link or QR code. Scan a QR with the Camera app and tap Cellular Plan Detected, or use Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan.
  • Choose the line for data: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data, then the travel line.
  • If the iPhone offers Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM when you arrive, the second choice can still bring roaming fees on your home line.

Pixel

  • Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM.
  • Most Pixel phones run one physical SIM plus one eSIM; Pixel 7 and later can run two eSIMs if the carrier allows it. Pixels bought in Japan cannot have two SIMs.

On the trip

  • Keep data roaming off for the home line, so only the travel eSIM uses data abroad.
  • Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM when you land.
  • Back home, turn the travel line off and choose your home line for data again.

Not connecting after you land? Fixes in order.
