iPhone
- eSIM for travel works on iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later.
- Carrier lock: Settings > General > About. It must say No SIM Restrictions next to Carrier Lock.
- Two eSIMs can be active at once on supported models, so your home line keeps calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries data.
- iPhone 14 and later bought in the US have no SIM tray at all, so they are eSIM-ready by design. In mainland China only a few recent models support eSIM.
- On iOS 17.4 or later an Add eSIM link installs the plan in one tap; our mail and ticket use it, with the QR as backup.
Android
- A phone needs an EID to use eSIM. On Pixel: Settings > About phone > SIM status shows it.
- Add a plan on Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM. Samsung and others use similar wording under Connections or SIM manager.
- Carrier-locked Android phones refuse other networks' eSIMs; ask your carrier to unlock before the trip.
If your phone cannot
- Ask your carrier to unlock it; most do once the phone is paid off.
- Use a pocket Wi-Fi router or a local physical SIM instead. See eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi.
Full model list and step-by-step screens are on the install page.
